The nighttime operation did not go exactly to plan...

As part of the D-Day 80 commemorations, the visitors and Normandy locals were promised a synchronised, spectacular firework display on each of the five Operation Overlord beaches. Night fell, and Stan Mallett’s son stood on Omaha Beach, waiting.

The Editor of this website wrote to the D-Day80 organisers, querying why there appeared to be no fireworks on Omaha Beach.  This was the reply received on 18th June 2024 from the secretary to the Vierville-sur-Mer Mayor (translated from French):

Good morning,

There were five firework displays on 1st June, 2024:

– Grandcamp Maisy; Pointe du hoc; Vierville sur Mer (Omaha Beach); Colleville sur mer (Omaha Beach); Aure sur Mer

So there were definitely fireworks going off at Omaha Beach.

Kind regards

Julie BOURDIN

Secrétaire de mairie

One can only assume that the firework displays did not correspond exactly with the D-Day landing sites, a point that was missed in advance by several of the hopeful spectators.
