Military Cross

In the whole of the Second World War, only 65 RAF personnel won the Military Cross which is the second highest Gallantry award. It is remarkable that 4 of these Military Crosses were awarded to members of 21 BDS on 6th June 1944 and following days. In addition, 2 Military Medals were awarded.

The four Officers who won the Military Cross were Acting Squadron Leader Norman Best, Flight Lieutenant Dr Richard Ryecroft, The Reverend Geoffrey Harding and Squadron Leader Frederick Trollope.

The two Military Medals that were won were by Leading Aircraftman John Reid and Flight Sergeant Reuben Eckersall.
