Plaque no.52

Frank Mallett writes: I was in Normandy from 31st May to 2nd June, 2024.  I am the proud son of Aircraftman Stan Mallett, part of the RAF team that landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day 1944.  I was visiting the British Normandy Memorial.  One of my objectives was to photograph the commemorative plaque no.52, sponsored by Roger Kelly in memory of his father Chris Kelly and the 150 men of RAF 21 Base Defence Sector Mobile Radar Unit 2nd Tactical Air Force, who landed in support of American Forces on Omaha Beach on D-Day.

Julie Verne (Normandy Memorial Trust) was able to confirm the plaque was already in situ within the Standing With Giants exhibition; I was able to locate the plaque and take the following photographs.  Objective achieved!

Roger Kelly responds: It may have taken until 2021 for the British Normandy Memorial to be completed but it is a wonderful tribute to those who landed on 6th June 1944 and served in the following campaign. The unique contribution of 21BDS and their losses needs to be remembered. Therefore, I decided that, among the many Tribute Plaques, there should be one to my father and his colleagues in that unit. It has been my pleasure to provide it.
