The End of an Era?
John Moore, believed to be the last surviving member of GCI 15082, passed away on Saturday, 23rd November, 2024. He was aged 100.

John was born 1924 in Great Yarmouth, where he grew up. He volunteered for the RAF on his 18th birthday; he enlisted in September 1942, and actually did his basic training in Great Yarmouth. His first posting was at a CHL station near Belfast until early 1944 when the station closed. He was then sent to RAF Cranwell where he trained as a radio operator and was assigned to an MSU and landed late afternoon on Omaha Beach. From there he headed for Cherbourg then through France into Belgium and Holland where he saw action on the Walcheren Islands. John’s unit was in Wolfenbuttel south of Brunswick when Germany surrendered. He left the RAF in late 1946 and settled in Great Yarmouth before retiring to a village on the Norfolk Broads.
The Editor writes > If John was “the last man standing” from the RAF team, we salute him. As indeed we salute all the servicemen who landed and fought on Omaha Beach in June 1944, those who died and those who survived. We remember you. May you Rest in Peace.
